What does the Bible have to say about THE END TIMES

Week three of our study in “What does the Bible have to say about…” on Wednesday night during Oasis found us looking at the End Times.  This is definately just a thumbnail sketch of what the Bible says about the End Times, but it’s a start.  Next week we’ll go into what the Bible says about Heaven and Hell.

  1. Christ’s Return
    1. All Christians agree with the WHAT of Christ’s return
      1. Christ’s return will be the judgment of unbelievers and the final reward of believers, and that believers will live with Christ in a new heaven and a new earth for all eternity
    2. Verses Predicting a Sudden return of Christ
      1. Matthew 24:42-44 – “”Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
      2. Mark 13:32-33 – “”No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Be on guard! Be alert[f]! You do not know when that time will come.”
      3. Luke 12:40, 1 Thessalonians 5:2, James 5:7-9, 1 Peter 4:7, Revelation 1:3; 22:7
    3. Signs of Christ’s return
      1. The Preaching of the Gospel to all Nations (Mark 13:10; Matthew 24:14)
      2. The Great Tribulation (Mark 13:7-8, 19-20; Matthew 24:15-22; Luke 21:20-24)
      3. False Prophets Working Signs and Wonders (Mark 13:22; Matthew 24:23-24)
      4. Signs in the Heavens (Mark 13:24-25; Matthew 24:29-30; Luke 21:25-27)
      5. The Coming of the Man of Sin and Rebellions (2 Thessalonians 2:1-10)
      6. The Salvation of Israel (Romans 11:12; 25-26)
  2. The Millennium and Rapture
    1. Much controversy occurs over this
    2. Revelation 20:4-5 – “I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5(The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection.”
    3. The word “rapture” is not in the Bible, but refers to when Christ calls Christians into heave
    4. When and how these events take place is much debated, but their certainty is not
  3. The Final and Eternal Punishment
    1. Revelation 20:11-15 – “Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
    2. See also Acts 17:30-31; Romans 2:5; Matthew 10:15; 11:22,24; 12:36; 25:31-46; 1 Corinthians 4:5; Hebrews 6:2; 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6; and plenty others!
    3. The Final Judgment
      1. The Final Judgment will occur after the Millennium and the final battle (Rev. 19-20)
      2. Jesus Christ will be the Judge (2 Timothy 4:1)
      3. Unbelievers will be judged on every sin (Matthew 12:36; Ecclesiastes 12:14; Luke 12:2-3, 47-48; Romans 2:6; Luke 8:17)
      4. Believers will be judged based on merit in Christ, not condemnation (Romans 8:1; 14:10, 12; 1 Corinthians 4:5; 2 Corinthians 3:12-15; 5:9-10)
      5. The eternal destination is either Heaven or Hell
      6. Next week’s lesson will be “What does the Bible have to say about HEAVEN AND HELL”
